COMMUNITY IN PERIL: FROM INDIVIDUAL IDENTITIES TO GLOBAL CITIZENSHIP
The Department of English and American Studies and the Department of Romance Languages and Literatures of Masaryk University are pleased to announce call for papers for their interdisciplinary conference held in Brno, Czech Republic on two full conference days on 25–26 November 2022.
This year, the theme interrogates the impact borders and boundaries have had on communities of mainly North America as well as Anglophone, Francophone and Hispanic countries and communities in the postcolonial world. Ranging from cultural and literary topics, the conference is concerned with ideas of identity, and how internal sense of selfhood complements or collides with external projections of created boundaries. The primary concern is to contrast the historical circumstance of one's place in a specific community as opposed to the subsequent period of globalization and contemporary societal expectations and pressures on individual and systemic levels.
We welcome a variety of submissions on topics of culture, literature and linguistics that follow our general theme and encourage interpretations of selfhood, identity and boundaries within these specific frames of thought:
- Identity, culture, and territorial studies
- Selfhood, identity, otherness; nation and nationality
- Historic borders, artificial borders, physical and virtual borders
- Migration, brain drain, Pareto principle
- Gender studies, femininities, masculinities
- Intersectionality, double standards, historical and present-day bias
- Discrimination and privilege, advantage and disadvantage
- Marginalization, center and periphery, non‑conformity
- Race, ethnicity, heritage, indigenous discourses
- Contemporary affairs and translation studies
- Globalization, sharing cultures, trends, and popular icons
- Global social matters reflected in fiction and non‑fiction
- Consumerism, popular genres, (social) media
- Fashion, design, culture
- Food culture, gastro tourism, cuisine and identity
- Localization and transcreation
- Translating global and local narratives and identities
CALL FOR PAPERS
The conference provides a space for graduate students to present their original work and exchange ideas in a number of themes. We invite PhD students and advanced MA students to present their ongoing research or completed projects. Please submit 250-word proposals to: globalcitizenship2022@phil.muni.cz by Friday, 14 October 2022 (2nd call). The abstract should include the title of your paper, your name, email address, affiliation, and a 100-word bio. Papers will be 15 minutes long followed by a 30-minute discussion allotted to each panel. Please note that your papers may be in English, Spanish or French.
Notification of paper acceptance will be sent within a week of sending in your proposal. The program of the conference will be published by the beginning of November.
Conference fees: The €20 registration fee (500 CZK for Czech students) includes access to conference sessions and keynote presentations, coffee breaks and refreshments, workshops, certificate of participation and other materials. We will send out bank details and instructions on the bank transfer to our delegates after the end of the submission deadline.
